By Abid Iqbal on Thursday 30th of Jan 2014

AMD has finally unveiled an ARM architecture based server processor. The Opteron A11 from AMD is a nn ARM v8 based processor after announcing to make ARM server CPU’s back in 2012. The AMD Opteron A1100 is mainly focused on high-density servers where its important to run many threads at once rather than running one thread quickly.

The AMD Opteron A1100 uses four or eight ARM Cortex-A57 cores clocked at more than 2 GHz. It packs 4MB of L2 cache and 8MB of L3 cache and even supports dual-channel DDR4 RAM and 128GB of DDR3 RAM.  On the connectivity side it has PCIe 3, SATA  3 and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The processor consumes 25W of power so its clear that it won’t be used in anything smaller than laptop. The processor also has Crypto and data compression co-processors.

AMD is also offering a development kit which is packed in a Micro-ATX form factor with Fedora based Linux OS and a bunch of developing software such as Apache, MySQL and PHP. Let’s see how AMD manages to compete with others being a new player in this ARM industry.
