Asus launches the Padfone Infinity, with PixelMaster camera technology

By Surajkumar Harikumar on Tuesday 17th of Sep 2013

Asus unveiled their new PadFone Infinity today in their Taipei press event. The phone comes with several improvements over its predecessor, the most prominent being the quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC, clocking in at 2.2 GHz and 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, giving it a performance boost. The phone comes in variants with 16 / 32 GB of  internal storage, and will also pack a microSD card slot. The phone will come equipped with a 5-inch HD Super IPS 1920×1080 display, and will host a 2400 mAh battery.

Two other stand out features are the design and the camera. In terms of design, the phone now comes with a diamond cut metallic backside, giving the device a more solid and premium feel. The software also got an upgrade, to an Android 4.2 base and improved UI in terms of simpler icons and for the built-in Android Apps.

The PadFone Infinity comes with a 13 MP f/2.0 rear shooter, and a 2 MP front-facing camera. The intrigue here arises from the camera app, which Asus has updated to include its new PixelMaster, which combines multiple pixels to form a clearer 3 MP image. We’ve already seen this oversampling technique used by Nokia in the Lumia 1020‘s PureView camera.

The device comes fully equipped with WiFI, NFC, and the works. It will come in 2 colors, ‘Titanium Black’, and ‘Platinum White’. The phone will be priced at around $640 without contract, and $240 for the dock. It will be interesting to see how the camera techniques employed here stack up against Nokia’s dedicated camera phone.
