Jolla plans to sell Meego smartphones of 3.5″ display size and they will run Android apps. And the LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black ICS updates are finally confirmed. LG Optimus VU launches globally equipped with a Tegra 3 chipset.
Jolla Meego handsets to run Android Apps
Jolla, the spin off business from former Nokia employees is getting closer to launching it’s MeeGo powered handset. Jolla had promised to launch at least 1 MeeGo powered smartphone within 2012, and it intends to do that. Fresh details have leaked out on the future MeeGo phones and they are interesting.
An interview with Jussi Hurmola, CEO of JollaMobile has lead to some intriguing observations and news for these upcoming MeeGo handsets.
-> MeeGo will run HTML5, Qt as well as Android apps thanks to ACL (Android Compatibility Layer)
-> A 3.5″ display sized MeeGo handset is under development by Jolla
-> First new MeeGo handset to be announced before end of 2012
All this is really great news. The Nokia N9 at 3.9″ was the perfectly sized MeeGo smartphone. However, I think people could live with a slightly smaller (probably cuter) 3.5″ version instead. The biggest news is the ability to run Android Apps. Now the extent of how many apps will run, or will there be performance differences etc. is unknown. But this solves the single biggest problem for MeeGo and Jolla’s new handsets at launch i.e. an active developer community with an apps ecosystem. That gets solved with the ACL, opening MeeGo up to the hundreds of thousands of apps on Android.
LG Optimus VU selling globally with a Tegra 3 chipset
LG Optimus VU, LG’s desperate (and not that great) attempt at a Galaxy Note is finally going for sale worldwide. However, it trades it’s Snapdragon dual-core with a quad-core nVidia Tegra 3 chipset. This 5″ phablet has a weird 4:3 aspect ratio, which many liked while (probably) many more disliked.
LG Optimus VU Full Specifications:
- nVidia Tegra 3 chipset
- Quad-Core ARM Cortex A9
- GeForce ULP GPU
- 1 GB RAM
- 5″ HD(1024×768) IPS-LCD
- 8 MP camera, LED flash
- 1.3 MP front cam
- 168g weight
- 2080 mAh Li-Ion battery
The phone failed on many levels. The biggest itch remains the odd display. LG could do better with a redesigned Optimus VU holding a 16:9 widescreen HD display instead. Maybe in the Optimus VU 2?
ICS Updates for LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black Confirmed
ICS updates for the world’s first dual-core, the LG Optimus 2x along with the Optimus Black have been finally confirmed. For long, people believed that LG had abandoned these phones. This was a big issue especially because Optimus 2X too wasn’t getting a confirmed ICS upgrade, which was downright sad. However, it is now confirmed that LG Korea will be pushing ICS updates, so we don’t see a point why the update won’t be pushed globally. Also, new retail boxes of the LG Optimus Black suggest that the phone is ICS upgradable, adding more credibility to the story. All in all, great news for owners of both handsets.
