Now Official: Sony Xperia Z1 Compact with a 4.3-inch Triluminos IPS HD screen & 20.7MP Exmor RS camera

After a handful of rumours about the ‘Mini’ version of Xperia Z1, Sony has finally made it official, as the Xperia Z1 Compact. Sony is actually very keen on not calling this smartphone a ‘Mini’, and is trying to distinguish it from the current trend of so called ‘mini’ versions which actually aren’t anywhere near to their original flagship versions due to downgraded hardware.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is almost identical to the Xperia Z1 in all the important aspects. It has the same 2.15GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It features the same IP57/58 certified body for water resistance and the tempered shatter-resistant screen. Most importantly, it maintains the same 20.7MP camera with 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor and LED flash. The only thing that has changed is the screen. The Xperia Z1 Compact comes with a smaller 4.3 inch Triluminos IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 341 PPI.

This time, Sony has used an IPS panel to solve the lingering issue.

Sony was aware of screen viewing angle issues on its smartphones. This time, Sony has used an IPS panel to solve the lingering issue. With a partial HD 720p resolution, this screen has pixel density of 341 PPI. This may not be as fantastic as 441 PPI on Xperia Z1, but it still crosses the so called ‘Retina Barrier’. As a result of smaller display and lower resolution, less  power is consumed and Sony has decided to put a smaller 2,300 mAh battery instead of 3,000 mAh battery used In the Xperia Z1. Although, it will still manage to deliver similar 2 days of battery life.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Colour Options - Black, Lime, White & Pink

The Xperia Z1 Compact is almost 1mm thicker than the Xperia Z1 at 9.5mm. The phone looks very identical to Z1 It comes in four exciting colours variants; White, Pink, Lime and Black. Sony says that the phone is perfect for single-handed usage. The Xperia Z1 Compact comes with Android 4.3 JellyBean out of the box and the Android 4.4 KitKat update will be available as soon as its initial market availability.

Sony has done a great job by not compromising on important hardware aspects with its compact version of Xperia Z1 flagship. HTC One Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini on the other hand had neither the same processing power nor the camera. According to Sony, the phone will be available by mid February. You can expect the price point of the phone to be lower than the Sony Xperia Z1 but higher than Xperia Z.
