Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Coming to your Big pockets on August 15

By Rohit Ramesh on Tuesday 24th of Jul 2012

Samsung Galaxy Note was the first super-successful so-called phablet to be launched. And it’s successor, the Note 2 is just round the corner.

Dell Streak. Many do remember this 5″ smartphone. Huge, some called it. Pointless, a few others. But it showed the way for other manufacturers that there indeed is a niche for excessively large smartphones, without them becoming a tablet. And Samsung took cue and launched it’s Galaxy Note last year. We all know just how popular this phone got.

Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 specifications:
  • Exynos 4210 Cortex A9 chipset
  • 1.4 GHz dual-core
  • Mali-400 MP4 quad-core
  • 5.3″ WXGA(1280×800) Super AMOLED
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 16 / 32 GB internal storage
  • upto 32 GB memory card
  • 8 MP camera, AF, LED flash
  • Video 1080p @ 30fps
  • 2 MP front cam
  • Android ICS 4.0.4
  • 2500 mAh Li-Ion battery
  • 178g weight

As you can see, the Galaxy Note packed quite a punch. The phone became quickly popular, despite it’s high price tag. Needless to say, it sold exceedingly well. People simply loved this new smartphone-tablet hybrid, which finally gave birth to the term “phablet”. LG also tried to enter this market with their Optimus VU, but critics turned it down quickly. The Galaxy Note was unbeatable. Add to that the capacitive stylus, and a display large enough to actually draw on, you can see why people’s imagination got the better of them and they  ended up spending moolah on this handset.

2012, enter Galaxy Note 2. This wildly rumored handset is finally going to be unveiled on August 15. However, we already have some level of knowledge as to what to expect. There are many rumors, including Note 2 having a Full HD display. We find that highly unlikely especially when the smallest Full HD display after 10″ is at 5″, not the 5.5″ display that the Note 2 is rumored to have. Let’s take a look at the tech specifications so we have an idea as to what to expect.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 rumored specifications:
  • Exynos 4412 Cortex A9 chipset
  • Quad-Core 1.4 GHz
  • Mali-400 MP4+ (50% faster)
  • 5.5″ Super AMOLED HD display
  • HD 1280×720 resolution
  • 1/2GB RAM
  • 12/13 MP camera, AF, LED flash
  • 1080p video recording

Also, a few days ago a there were some leaked benchmarks of the Galaxy Note 2 chipset which we have included for you to have a look at.

These benchmarks reveal quite a lot. First of all we can be assured that this device is a quad-core, but not of the newest Cortex A-15 architecture. Sadly, it will still be based on ARM Cortex A-9. Also, the display apparently has fewer pixels than the original Note’s 1280×800. The new resolution will be HD 1280×720, if rumors are to be believed.

Overall, we see a new device which is no doubt, impressive at first glance. Add to that the design being heavily inspired by the Samsung Galaxy S3, we see the Note 2 to be a hugely successful and popular product just like the original Note.
