Updated: Sony Xperia Z2 (Sirius) Flagship Smartphone Coming At MWC 2014?

By Aniruddh on Friday 17th of Jan 2014

Sony might announce a bigger and upgraded version of the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z2 (Sirius) this Mobile World Congress.

Not long ago, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact made its debut at CES 2014. It proved to be the first ‘mini’ smartphone that is very well equipped unlike other brands which make minis with rather cut-down features and specifications. Aptly named as the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, it retained the ultra-powerful 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, an impressively clear 20.7 MP camera, and the same water and dust proof nature that Sony is bragging about its smartphones.

Guess what, Sony might announce a bigger and upgraded version of the Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z2 (Sirius) this Mobile World Congress. The information was published in a tweet by @evleaks but we should take this as a pinch of salt as it is slightly unlikely for Sony to release a newer flagship just months after releasing the Xperia Z1. It appears that the Sony Xperia Z2 will sport a slightly faster Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AB SoC), clocked at 2.3 GHz instead of a newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (featuring much more powerful Adreno 420 GPU).

Sony would probably stick with their latest ‘TRILUMINOS’ display technology which drastically improved the screen viewing angles when it was first used in the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. The technology uses a wider pallet of colours for better image reproduction, bringing graphics closer to reality. In addition to this display panel, the latest range of flagship Xperia smartphones come with X-Reality Engine which assists in improving colour reproduction, contrast, and image sharpness. The X-reality engine also includes the Super Resolution function, which fills up those missing pixels making your graphics crisper. However, it’s the display resolution that will make the Xperia Z2 stand out of the crowd, a 5.2 inch 2560 x 1440 pixels display, resolving up to a staggering 564 ppi, if rumours are true. Undoubtedly, the sharpest display ever. The 20.7MP Exmor RS camera would probably be the same as the Sony Xperia Z1,  but we do expect to see more camera software related features added to this device such as the Background Defocus app which was released with Sony Xperia Z1S (AT&T version of Xperia Z1).

Coming to the design, Sony has made a name for themselves with their popular Aluminium power button, and a sturdy water-dust certified Aluminium-Glass design.  It might sport a 3700 mAh battery and will come with  4G LTE support.

Update: The back cover of the Sony Xperia Z2 is leaked which shows that Sony might drop the use of glass materials for making the back of their flagship smartphones and might switch to metallic or carbon fibre materials.
