Today in Smartphones: Samsung WP8 models, Galaxy S Duos & Galaxy Player 5.8

By Rohit Ramesh on Monday 20th of Aug 2012

The Internet popped up with details of Samsung’s planned high-end and mid-range WP8 handsets to be released in the coming months. Also featured is the Galaxy S Duos, a dual-sim S3 look-alike with a Galaxy S size. Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 leaks out.

Samsung WP8 handset models leaked

Two Samsung WP8 handset models got leaked today. One is all set to be a flagship high-end device, while the other is a mid-range smartphone for the more general masses. The new Samsung phones will continue to use the Omnia naming scheming as the Omnia 7, M and W had before. So let us have a quick look at what Samsung has in store for us.

Samsung GT-I8750 “Odyssey”

No doubt the flagship device, you will say so yourself after reading the specifications.

  • 1.5 GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon S4
  • Adreno 225 GPU
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 4.8″ HD(1280×720) SuperAMOLED
  • 8 MP camera, 1.9 MP front cam
  • 16/32 GB internal storage
  • $600-$750 price range

If you were hoping for a sensibly priced phone, you’re outta luck. It seems flagship WP8 phones will cost as much as the iPhone and flagship DROIDS. This means they better be good!

Samsung GT-I8370 “Marco”

The mid-range device from Samsung. This is aimed more at the masses than just hitting the maximum specifications battle.

  • 1.5 GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon S4
  • Adreno 225 GPU
  • 1 GB / 512 MB RAM
  • 4″ WVGA(800×480) SuperAMOLED
  • 5 MP camera, 1.9 MP front cam
  • 8 GB internal storage
  • $400-$500 price range

Call me a complaint box but if that pricing is right, then it is downright ridiculous. At that price range nobody would pick such a phone up. These phones however will most probably sell in the US carrier subsidized. A big sigh to that.

We can’t wait for WP8 handsets to launch and see what lies ahead of us. Nokia World, September 5th should give us more insight. Needless to say, these Samsung phones would come with micro SD card slots, as well as Nokia software such as Nokia Maps pre-installed.

Samsung Galaxy S Duos S7562

Samsung Galaxy S Duos can be best described as a Galaxy S3 lookalike, shrunk to a 4″ display size and fitted with a single core processor and dual-sim support instead. Pre-installed ICS gives us something to cheer about. The phone is designed for people who want a premium like handset while having dual-sim support. Good for people who need different numbers for their work and personal lives.

Samsung Galaxy S Duos Full Specifications:

  • Snapdragon S1 MSM7227A
  • 1 GHz ARM Cortex A5
  • Adreno 200 enhanced GPU
  • 4″ WVGA(800×480) display
  • 768 MB RAM
  • 4 GB internal storage
  • 5 MP rear cam, LED flash
  • VGA video @ 30fps
  • VGA front cam
  • 120g weight
  • 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery

Overall, the handset is looking real good. It has plenty of RAM (more than the original Galaxy S), comes with ICS out of the box and has a premium design. A front camera adds the option for video calling. The large 4″ display should be enough for most. VGA video recording is a let down. It all finally boils down to the price at which Samsung launches this handset.

Read on for GSMArena’s first impressions of the Samsung Galaxy S Duas S7562.

Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8

Samsung is set to launch a new Galaxy Player. There is a tiny difference. The new Galaxy Player is gigantic, 5.8″ gigantic. Have a look.

After Galaxy Player 3.6, 4, 4.2 and 5 (number indicating screen size), this new device has left us confused. 5.8″ is pretty much tablet territory (alright, a mini tablet). It’s too big. They might as well call this a mini movie watching device on the go and it would make more sense than a music player. However, the device does come with Android 4.0 ICS installed, and with Android your possibilities are  a lot (if not endless). We are eager to see more on where this peculiar product ends up and it’s pricing and how many people do end up buying it. Our only complaint would be the huge screen accompanied by a low qHD(960×540) display, a first for Samsung.
