Today has been a particularly busy day. Scratch that, this week has been pretty busy with announcements and other things leaking out or leaked every single day or the other. Today we see Windows 8 RT Tablets which might be priced at $300, a leaked image of the Galaxy Note II and the Lenovo K860 LePhone, using a quad-core Exynos chipset and sporting a 5″ display.
Windows 8 RT Tablets to cost $199?
The Internet is full of weird reports. This ain’t one of them. Windows 8 RT tablets, the ones running the ARM version of Microsoft Windows 8 and being powered by relatively cheaper Tegra 3 chipsets (instead of Intel Ivy Bridge in the Windows 8 x86 tablets) are alleged to cost anywhere between $199 to $399. And if this report is true, we will be seeing budget Windows 8 tablets go up against the army of cheap Android tablets, and the incoming iPad Mini rumored to hold a $299 price tag.
Lenovo’s North America operations head David Schmoock recently said, quote:
the devices will cost about $200 – $300 less than the $600 – $800 Windows 8 devices.
“RT will play in consumer and retail at very aggressive price points,” Schmoock said. The pricing for Windows RT tablets should fall in at about $300 – 500, based on Schmoock’s math, which makes them more competitive with the iPad pricing than the more budget-friendly Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. “It will do well but it’s going to be more of a consumer price point play to begin with,” he explained in an interview with Bloomberg. Scmoock thinks Windows RT devices will offer a “very good consumer box,” and Windows 8 will be more attractive to enterprise customers who need more power.
Differences chart between Surface Win 8 PRO v/s RT
This actually makes a lot of sense. Microsoft will make two separate lines of the Surface tablet. One will be the less expensive variety more suited to the consumers in general, i.e. Windows 8 RT. The other being the more powerful Intel Ivy Bridge sporting full Windows 8 tablets to cost between $599-$999. This would be for the business users, and those who can spare money. The chart above shows a few differences between the two Surface tablets.
