Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy gear will be officially announced at their IFA event this Wednesday. Before the official reveal, the folks over at Venturebeat managed to get their hands on a prototype device.
The Galaxy Gear has been heavily rumoured over the last month. While some sources have mentioned that it would feature a flexible screen, others have said that it would connect using NFC. Thanks to a prototype unit snagged by the folks over at Venturebeat, we can now take a look at what the Galaxy Gear will feature.
Starting with the screen, the Galaxy Gear will feature a 3-inch OLED screen, with no word on the resolution. The screen has a large bezel that gives it a rectangular look, and overall the watch face of the Galaxy Gear makes it look quite blocky.
The prototype unit features a black with a gray colour variation, but Samsung would likely launch other color schemes for the device once it goes official. The wristband on the device comes with in-built speakers. The smartwatch has a 4-megapixel camera built into the strap, which can be used for monitoring your health data. The watch also comes with a built-in heart rate monitor.
The camera comes with software which can categorize food based on its nutritional value, and you can additionally take pictures of food and tag it. The watch will connect to Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets, although it might also connect to other devices. The watch will use Bluetooth, and from the Galaxy Gear Manager screenshots that were leaked last week, we know that it can also connect using NFC. The watch comes with a call log feature through which you can access your mobile’s call log from your watch, and initiate a call from the watch directly to a Galaxy mobile device.
Also, the watch will be able to receive voice commands as it comes with S Voice in-built. The watch will come with pre-loaded Android software that assists you in monitoring and tracking your health, and it will also feature social media integration. The Galaxy Gear is touted to have a battery life of 10+ hours.
Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Gear this Wednesday at the IFA in Berlin.
