The Huawei CEO, Richard Yu, announced their plans for a new generation of mobile processors, via a Chinese blogging site named Weibo. What the world awaits is its new offering , a 64-bit octa-core SoC (System-On-A-Chip). This will join Apple’s A7, to lead the 64-bit mobile processing revolution. However, this new chip is just one among the two octa-cores that are planned for release. In addition to the two octa-cores the company also plans to release a new quad-core processor.
The 64-bit octa-core processor will have a combination of a quad-core Cortex-A57 CPU and a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU. The post made on the website was removed shortly after it was published. It’s architecture is based on ARM’s big.LITTLE ideology where the stronger quad-core Cortex A57 will take on the heavy tasks such as web-browsing and gaming while the latter (Cortex A53) will do the lighter chores. In addition to speedy processing, the 64-bit CPU cores are extremely power-efficient, so it would not be wrong to expect better battery life.
The other processor that was revealed is an octa-core processor will be manufactured on a 28nm fabrication processor and may be called “HiSilicon K3V2 Pro”. This will also follow a similar big-little architecture but a different combination. It couples ARM’s quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU with a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU. Last but not the least, the company also plans to announce a new quad-core chipset, manufactured on a 28nm fabrication process, based on ARM Cortex-A9 CPU cores. This chipset would most probably be set to target mid-range devices. Both the octa-core chipsets offer compatibility for GSM, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE and FDD-LTE cellular radio connectivity. Huawei seems to be eyeing Mobile World Congress in February 2014 for the official announcement of these new SoCs.
