Meet Ouya, the $99 open Android TV Game Console

We love console games.

Only today did I come across this queer name called OUYA. And it simply blew my mind. Without discussing further, let me tell you what OUYA really is.

OUYA, or should I say Oh Yeah! is a completely open game console based on the Android Operating System (which is open source, so to speak). When I say “open game console” I mean a 100% hackable one. Yep, Oh Yeah.. sorry OUYA is a completely hackable system open to you. No restrictions as such. This also means that you don’t void warranty by modifying the system or the OS. Yes, a dream come true for games and modders alike! And it comes with a mean configuration which seems in sync with the latest and greatest smartphones too. The OUYA game console connects to your TV, just like good ole days and gets you game on!

Hackers welcome.

OUYA Game Console Specifications:

Price Tag:  $99 (one controller bundled)

Launch Date: March 2013

Let me further explain what being totally open means:

- Free from 3rd Party
- No licensing fees
- No publishing fees
- No retail fees
- Every box is a developer box

The significance of this can hardly be understated. This can mean easier development of games both by AAA houses and indie devs, easier publishing and definitely lower costs. On top of that, any Android App can be published to OUYA making OUYA a complete entertainment box too (say you port over Twitch.tv as shown on OUYA’s Kickstarter page). The controller looks classy. We only have a look at one half, or slightly more than one half of the controller. But that is enough for our mind to render the complete image, and it is sweet. Totally!

Design matters.

The interface or dashboard for the Operating System seems pretty Xbox 360 like. But this might just be a concept as the actual unit is well over 7 months away from release. There is much that can happen between now and then, but all hopefully for the better.

OUYA’s developers have it all figured out it seems. But they really need your help in their Kickstarter project to make this a success (and it better be one, for I sure can’t wait for this!). To know why they need your funding, and to find out how you can help them or pre-order one of these sweet boxes, head over to their Kickstarter page.
