Gorilla Glass 3 to be introduced next week by Corning

“At CES 2013 Las Vegas on January 7th.”

Corning Gorilla Glass 3Corning the US glass maker, issued a public statement earlier today confirming unveiling of the 3rd edition of their flagship “Gorilla Glass” next week. It’s predecessor the Gorilla Glass 2 was released in January 2012. These sheet glasses specifically tailored for screens have been used in more than a billion mobiles and other electronic devices so far.

According to Corning, Gorilla glass 3 would be again tougher than the previous installment and increase in resistance to scratches by 3 folds. It is attributed to the incorporation of “Native Damage Resistance (NDR)” technology in Gorilla Glass 3. Statistically, about 50% more toughness and 40% lesser scratches visible to the naked eye.

Here’s the official announcement from Corning .

“This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers` favorite devices,” said Wendell P. Weeks, chairman, chief executive officer, and president. “These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity.”

At the event next week, Corning will illustrate the overall toughness and the usage of Gorilla 3 in “larger format, multi-touch displays for education, entertainment and other applications.” Complete specifications will be released on January 7th at the CES 2013 in Las Vegas.
