Micromax silently intros the A101, nothing to look here

It seems that Micromax didn’t stop with releasing the A100 phablet and quickly updating it with an enhanced A110 model. Micromax silently introduced a A101 model into the market as well, and it’s listed on Flipkart, and it’s on sale already. So check it out already!

Micromax-A101

Micromax A101 specifications

The Micromax A101 is a phablet. It packs the same 5″ screen size as the Micromax A110. However, this panel has some differences. You’ll know it all if you read the specifications.

  • 1 GHz dual core chipset
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • 5″ WVGA (800*480) display
  • 5 MP rear camera
  • 0.3 MP VGA front camera
  • 2 GB of internal storage
  • expandable upto 32 GB via micro SD card
  • 10.3 mm thickness, 200 grams weight
  • 2,100 mAh battery
  • Android 4.0.4 ICS

Micromax A101 Analysis

The chipset remains the same, the dual core 1 GHz ARM Cortex A9 from the Micromax A110. RAM is still at 512 MB. What changes is the display resolution and aspect ratio. We are looking at a marginally lower WVGA display v/s a FWVGA display (854*480) for the Micromax A110 (which gives it a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio instead). The display is also not of IPS LCD make, but just a standard TFT (bye bye good viewing angles).

There are changes in the design as well, the phone being both heavier and thicker (and definitely uglier) than the Micromax A110. The camera module is down graded to 5 MP from the (not so great anyways) 8 MP in the A110. The only better feature is the 2100 mAh battery, which is just slightly bigger (2000 mAh) than the one found in the A110. The phone packs the same near-vanilla Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich OS (that we love, but wish it got updated to Jelly Bean by now).

Overall, we really don’t see anybody buying the Micromax A101 over the A110. Perhaps because of the low availability of the Micromax A110 (which can be attributed to it’s high demand, leading it to be out of stock almost everywhere where the price is at MRP), Micromax decided to cash in and direct buyers to this new piece of hardware.

My 2 cents – Wait for the A110 if you can. Or buy it at a Rs. 1,000 premium over this device. Initial reviews on Flipkart aren’t that great as well.
