NVIDIA Comes Up With Fastest Mobile Processor – Tegra 4

Tegra 4 processor for mobile phones and tablets has made its debut yesterday. The Nvidia product launched at CES, 2013. Claims say that it is the fastest processor revealed. This quad core wonder is said to be six times faster than its predecessor Tegra 3 and 20 times faster than the Tegra 2.

Tegra 4 has 72 custom GPU cores and 4 ARM Cortex-A15 CPU cores and utilizes the latest 28nm manufacturing technology. Tegra 3 has 12 GPU cores. The SoC is a quad-core with a companion core to reduce load and power, similar to Tegra 3.  It consumes 45% lesser power than Tegra 3.

Optional 4G LTE with Icera technology is also available. Video support has been increased to 1440p and can operate screen resolution upto 2560 x 1600; thus offering full HD. Frequency is said to be 120 Hz. To reduce backlight power and prolong battery life, Project ShieldPRISM 2 (Pixel Rendering Intensity and Saturation Management) display technology has been used. It also enables the ‘first Always-on HDR camera’.

CEO Jen-Hsun Huang demonstrated Tegra 4’s capabilities by taking shots with high dynalic range in real time. The processor is said to play video playback for 14 hours on smartphones.

Nvidia-designed product, an Android gaming controller called Project Shield, will be powered by Tegra 4.
