As expected, the Consumer Electronics Show 2013 at Las Vegas kick-started the year at the correct note. We saw a plethora of dazzling phones, tablets, cameras and ofcourse, phablets. Samsung had initiated this whole new category of gadgets last year with the release of Galaxy Note, and got loads of buyers from round the globe. Watching people drooling over these hybrids of phone and tablet, many companies have jumped into the phablet arena and have showcased their fads at CES 2013. Let’s take a look at those that turned most heads.

Lenovo K900

This sleek unibody phablet from the laptop manufacturer got much limelight at the CES. It is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom processor and runs on Android operating system. Neither the clock speed nor the Android version are known, but we suspect the Z2580 processor will be clocked at 1.5GHz and the phone will run Android 4.0.

The display is Gorilla Glass 2 protected 5.5” IPS LCD with 400 pixels per inch and 1080p quality. The phone measures just 6.9mm in thickness and 162g in weight. In that little space Lenovo has packed a staggering 13MP camera with Sony’s BSI sensor. The phablet will be first released in China at an unknown price tag and then expanded to several other countries, including India. Watch out for this one!

ZTE Grand S

Continuing with its Grand series, ZTE launched the Grand S at CES 2013. This 4G LTE enabled phablet ships with Android Jelly Bean and is powered by a 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor. The display is beautiful and crisp with 440 pixels per inch packed in a 5” HD screen. It also possesses a 13MP camera with 1080p video capability.

ZTE has tweaked with the Android by mixing it with company’s native MiFavor UI. The combination looks clean and simple and resembles HTC’s Sense UI that is widely loved by smartphone users. From the initial reports, the touch has been found to be bit insensitive. It will also be available first in China at an undisclosed price.

Sony Xperia Z

This was undoubtedly the most anticipated phablet at this year’s CES. With leaks coming from time to time, Sony had to face a lot of expectations and it didn’t disappoint. Powered by the latest Snapdragon S4 Pro with a quad-core 1.5GHz Krait processor, the smartphone has the thin and sharp unibody design now traditional to Sony’s Xperia series. The display is 5-inch 1080p with Mobile Bravia 2 Engine bringing the television quality in your hands.

Even this phablet equals the previous two on camera with 13MP HDR recording enabled lens. The OS is the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The phablet’s dust and water resistant conforming to IP57 standards. It is expected to be available by March in India.

Huawei Ascend D2

The Chinese manufacturer was sure to make headlines with its gigantic and powerful phablets and it did just that. The Ascend D2 is the smaller of the twin devices launched at CES 2013. The single biggest advantage is the mammoth 3,000 mAh battery, almost double than all the phablets we saw above. The Ascend D2 works on 1.5GHz Huawei Hisilicon processor and runs Android 4.1.2. Like ZTE, Huawei also has integrated a tweaked version of the OS under the name Emotion UI.

The device is pretty lightweight at 170g and measures 9.9 mm on the sides. Screen is 5” with 1080 X 1920 resolution which is quite good. Again, the camera rating is 13MP which seems to have become the new standard for such high-end devices. Huawei is expected to deliver this great phablet outside China shortly and, considering the company’s origins, we expect a decent pricing for the Ascend D2.

Samsung Galaxy Grand

Finally we take a look at the phablet of the pioneer itself. One may ask that after the resounding success of Galaxy Note and excellent reception of the Note II, why one more phablet? Well, the Galaxy Grand is definitely a mid-range device from Samsung. With the looks and body bearing astounding resemblance with the iconic SIII, the Grand carries a 5 inch display that is just WVGA 480 X 800. The camera is a humble 2MP front-facing and an 8MP rear lens. Even the processor is 1.2GHz dual-core which is barely satisfactory for a phablet of a bigger size. Perhaps the only ‘latest’ in that list is its OS: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which has still not made its way into all Android devices.

There is even a dual-SIM kin of Galaxy Grand and is surely going to lure the Indian customer. Together with its expected price of about Rs 25,000, this can become the phablet of choice in the country.
