Samsung confirms it will release Tizen devices this year

Samsung has announced that they will be releasing smart devices based on the new Tizen platfrom in 2013. After Google finalized its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola, Samsung was quick to realise that depending on just Android would prove fatal in the future. To nullify the potential threat to Android vendors like Samsung they need to diversify their offerings, hence Tizen. Intel has also joined the brigade to improve their presence in the smartphones arena. Tizen, an open-source platform just like Android, is backed by Intel, Samsung, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone Group.

“We plan to release new, competitive Tizen devices within this year and will keep expanding the lineup depending on market conditions,”

- Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung representative said in an e-mail statement.

Most recently, Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported Samsung will bring a Tizen on NTT Docomo in 2013.

Tizen will initially target the lower-end smartphone market, but it is effectively a successor to Samsung’s Bada OS platform. Samsung will try to push it as hard as it can in Asian and other markets where it has a domineering presence. With the backing of Intel and other corporations with similar interests, Samsung aims to rival Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 and RIM’s BlackBerry 10 for being the third largest mobile operating system.
