Sony unveils SmartWatch

Sony Android Based Smartwatch

Today’s world is driven by multitasking. For successful multitasking we need multi-utility devices. When everything from a pen to a phone can perform more than one task why should the wrist watch be left behind? With all the gadgets around, the wrist watch is now running a risk of becoming obsolete as it is no longer an indispensible time-telling tool. Innovators at Sony have given this particular accessory a new lease of life and made it Smart! This Android-based SmartWatch is the newest arrival in a long line of Smart devices.

Discrete and handy, this watch lets you check emails, messages, Facebook updates, Tweets and play music. And of course, it tells the time. With a set of pinch, swipe and flip actions you can screen calls, use it as your running buddy and stay socially updated. The SmartWatch is not exactly a novelty – an Italian company released a similar Android-based watch called I’mWatch. That one quite apparently didn’t make much of an impact, but Sony’s product will definitely be a hot deal because of the huge share that Android holds in the Smartphone market, the watch’s sleek design and neat UI.

The watch sports a 1.3” square dial and is available in two shades – black and white. For those who would like to have a wider palette for their accessory, wristbands are available in various colors apart from the 20mm black band that comes with the watch. Without the band, the watch can be used as a clip too. It is quite light at 15.5g and only 8mm thick.

The SmartWatch uses Bluetooth to connect to the Internet through your Smartphone. Setting up the device is quite straightforward. After installing the LiveWare manager on your phone, proceed to pair the SmartWatch. On pairing, a prompt will be issued to download the SmartWatch App from the Google Play Store. When this application is installed, the watch is ready to work and this can be ensured by checking whether the time is displayed. For more applications to customize your SmartWatch with, head to the LiveWare manager which contains a list of recommendations. Apart from these must-haves, the Play Store already contains Mini-Apps specially developed for the watch. The color OLED display is appropriate and adequate for the watch’s functions.

Now retailing at USD150 at Sony’s online store, this product will be made available in India by the end of June, 2012. Android users should seriously consider adding this gadget to their accessory collection as it is stylish, sleek and functional.
