Spice Stellar Horizon Mi-500: The 5″ Phablet competitor to Galaxy Note

Indian mobile manufacturer Spice has made another addition to the blossoming “phablet” sector with the release of Spice Mi-500, otherwise known as the Stellar Horizon. Packed with numerous features, the phone retails for just Rs.11,999/-
The screen size of 4.5” has become quite commonplace with smartphones these days. Anything less than that is considered minuscule. The Stellar Horizon boasts of much real-estate in the screen sector at 5”. It’s not the biggest smartphone in existence (The Galaxy Note holds that record), but it is definitely big enough. This phone comes armed with a very impressive arsenal – a 1Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, a beefed up Adreno 205 GPU for enhanced graphics and a 512 MB RAM.

The phablet has competent storage capabilities with 4GB of inbuilt memory, externally expandable up to 32GB. The camera is on par with what you would expect from a phone belonging to the 12k price bracket – primary 5MP with LED flash, 0.3MP secondary for video calls. Digital zoom is also available for a rich photographic experience. The screen resolution is 480X800 pixels. Though it has doesn’t have the much desired Gorilla Glass, the display has multi-touch functionality.

  • Price Tag: Rs. 12,000
  • Expected Launch: End of August, 2012 [Updated]

The Mi-500 has well rounded connectivity options with 2G, HSDPA 3G, Bluetooth v2.1 and a USB port. Entertainment is packed into the phone with FM Radio, and you can listen to music with SRS audio enhancement with a regular 3.5mm jack.Another surprise feature of this phablet is that it is a dual sim phone. How many phones of this size, having similar specs can boast of this? Not many out there. The phone has the essential proximity and accelerometer sensors though the gyroscopic sensor seems to be missing.

All these with the magic of Android Ice Cream Sandwich v4.0 is sure going to be an engaging smartphone experience. Perhaps this phablet will be one of the recipients of the much-awaited Jelly Bean update. To have all these features up and running throughout the day, a generous 2150mAh has been included.

The Stellar Horizon holds quite some trump cards with the screen size and pricing. Those who dreamed of flaunting a beast without creating a crater in their bank balance can now head to the store and pick this one up. Quite a Stellar product on the Horizon it is!

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

      it hasn’t launched yet!

  • jatin

just one question- ‘enhanced adreno 205′ or ‘enhanced adreno 220′.
    if it’s 1 ghz snapdraggon processor,then it’s rebranded k-touch w710 ,
whatever, this mobile will be real good, waiting for the availibility in the market

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

hey. sorry! corrected it. It’s Just the “Adreno 220″ GPU. There is no enhanced Adreno 205 or 220.

There is however an enhanced Adreno 200 GPU

  • Kumar

Till now never waited this much for any other phone….

    • http://about.me/preetam_nath Preetam

Well. There is another phone you might be interested in then.

The G-Five handset. This one will be only Rs. 10,000 and feature:

      - 5.3″ display
      - 1GHz Processor
      - 512 MB RAM
      - Android 4.0 ICS

      Launches this month.

    • jaffakaran

bad luck dude its further delayed

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

the delay is irritating. Spice should deliver. If they can’t, I don’t know why they announced their phone soo early.

  • Ankit K.

    Hi Nikhila
From what source did you come to know that this phablet will be available in July end.
I am eagerly awaiting launch of this phone

    • jaffakaran

its further delayed to august end or September first week , u can search in google mi 500 delayed further for source of news

      • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

I don’t know about August End of September exactly though. thanks for the info

        • Yaswanth Kodavali

Its either August end or september first week as Jaffakaran says…

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

it was official Spice launch time frame. But it’s been delayed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sureshjanakiraman Suresh Janakiraman

I have received a mail from SMobility stating that the mobile would be launched by the end of July, 2012. I am not sure when the mobile would be made available in the Chennai and other city markets. I am planning to see Micromax A80 and Karbon A9 both would be just a shade lower to Stellar Horizone.

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

Suresh sir, if it is launched you can rest assured buy it from Chennai. Pretty sure the phone will be available through online e-tailers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sureshjanakiraman Suresh Janakiraman

whether there would be pre-booking available for this? if so let me know. How about it services across the cities. Not much in Chennai?

    • jaffakaran

no pre booking , pre booking is a big joke for this company as they dont even given full pledged specification like processor used , gpu used , build measurements … very bad promotion … so they are going to loose market for karbon and micromax who have also planning to release the andorid phones with 1ghz processor with dual cores and even lenovo gallant duo is comming to india in next month for 15000 . they no one look at spice in september .. the only feature is 5 inch what i now this about pro of this phone compared to other .

      • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

You’re right Jaffakaran. Acer Liquid Gallant Duo would be an amazing budget phone, and from a more reliable brand too. But it’s yet to be seen whether it launches in India, and if so, when.

        • Yaswanth Kodavali

          Acer a reliable brand?? YES!
A reliable brand in Smartphone market?? what can one say about that…

          • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

            ahaha. Yeah. True dat

      • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath
    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

Spice services are average. Nothing Stellar unlike the phone’s name. But they aren’t that bad.

  • sarvottam

i am dying to bye ths set

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

my main interest is in the Karbonn Smart A24.

  • prithvi

spice mi 500 is again delayed..this is the difference between a good company like samsung and CHEAP companies like SPICE. a company which cant keep up its promise, better stop operating….

    • jaffakaran

they are facing sever competition from karbonn a 24 and micromax new android phones announced at he end of june . so they keep on delaying, definitely they loose market no doubt .

      • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

you are right. G’Five is launching it’s 5.3″ phablet. Same specifications, everything the same but at a price of Rs. 9,500 only!

And Karbonn Smart A24 is hotly anticipated!

        • Yaswanth Kodavali

could be one of the company’s strategy to entice the customers to a point that it has a huge opening…or it could be the company’s measure to ensure enough supply considering, it too is a hugely awaited budge-android phone…what ever is the reason…i want to see if the final product is going to live up to the expectations and provide a better performance for the specs it has got…or is it going to falter like other budget phones coming from not-so-popular companies…

          • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

Well. It is 5.3″ with a WVGA. I can see many people cringe right there.

          • Yaswanth Kodavali

            so what’s your point??

          • http://www.facebook.com/RITZYtheDEVIL Ritesh Jain

His point is DPI or pixels per unit area…
With a screen that large having a resolution that low (Yes, WVGA ia low for such a large screen) image quality will not be very good.

          • http://www.facebook.com/yash.kodavali Yaswanth Kodavali

Oh that! I was not talking about GFive, I was actually talking about Spice.

          • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

@facebook-690758109:disqus thanks for clearing it out.

@facebook-646315249:disqus yep, my point was the PPI itself.

          • Yaswanth Kodavali

            ur point being???

    • http://twitter.com/IamRaj25 rajesh

why are you bothered with the delay when ur not interested in cheap companies.. u buy samsung only why are you waiting for its release han? may be u dont have money to buy samsung

  • Yaswanth Kodavali

features are awesome, screen size even better…and an inbuilt memory of 4GB sounds real yummy:)…but its delayed :( …so how and finally when is Spice planning to quench the hungry customers???

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

They announced it prematurely I think. Before their product was ready. Hence the delay I guess

      • Yaswanth Kodavali

ya as i said before..delay could be due to shortage issues…

  • Gary

It misses Gyro! Gaming on this phone will be effected?
    Advise is appreciated.

    • http://twitter.com/hipreetam93 Preetam Nath

I think Gyro feature will be there. It’s there on every handset and there is no apparent reason for simply not including such a component.

We are 90% sure it will be there. But of course, as we come closer to launch we can be a 100% sure.
