Today at Mobile World Congress, the Korean mobile giant Samsung revisited smartwatches with two newer ones. Only this time, the watches will lose their ‘Galaxy’ tag, and will simply be called the Samsung Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. With this new name, Samsung is introducing Tizen OS into its smartwatch ecosystem. It is clear that Samsung intends on wasting no time by announcing another set of smartwatches in a span of just six months.
Introducing Tizen OS was a move that caught many by surprise, one can only wait and see if it will raise any compatibility issues. For now, it is confirmed that the Gear 2 will be compatible with a wide range of Samsung devices. The fact that Samsung wants to restrict its compatibility list just to its devices may be a good move when it comes to marketing its devices. But then again, with devices like Sony’s Smartwatch 2, Samsung appears to be at a clear disadvantage, let alone using a comparatively young OS.
Other things aside, the Samsung Gear 2 is a step ahead its older counterpart with a few under the hood changes. It will come with software from Garmin, Line , BMW, Path, and CNN. For music lovers out there, this smartwatch features a standalone music player which will be compatible with a Bluetooth 4.0 headset. It also has a heart-rate monitor with various modes to suit your workout. The camera is now off the strap and adjacent to the top of the screen, this allows Samsung to offer interchangeable straps. Most of the other features from the previous version of the smartwatch have been retained.
One noticeable upgrade is the transition from a 800 MHz single-core processor to a more powerful 800 MHz dual-core one. Just to brush on other specifications, the Gear 2 has a 1.63 inch 320 x 320 pixels Super AMOLED display, 512 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of internal memory, and a 2 MP camera capable of capturing videos at 720p. It also has IR-Blaster which will allow you to use the phone as an infrared remote controller to control various home appliances. In addition to this, it has the S-Voice feature.
The Samsung Gear 2 Neo will have the same specs as the Samsung Gear 2 except that it does not have the 2 MP camera. The metal in the Gear 2 has been replaced by plastic. Samsung did not reveal anything about the prices of the devices. These smartwatches will hit the markets by April 2014.
