Ubuntu might launch touch based OS tomorrow
It seems that Canonical will be announcing a new Ubuntu based OS. And it seems that this will be a touch OS. Indeed, Ubuntu will be launching a touch OS, and that auspicious date happens to be tomorrow. January 2nd, 2013 as the counter says on Ubuntu’s website.
Ubuntu for Touch?
Ubuntu with Touch support might mean many things. There are various possibilities. We explore them with a quick glance over each.

Ubuntu for Tablets
Ubuntu might be headed for tablets as a touch based OS alternative to Android. Since Ubuntu on Linux kernel as ARM support already it, this won’t be particularly difficult. We have already seen the Nexus 7 tablet run Ubuntu on it in the recent past.
Ubuntu for Smartphones
Another possibility is Ubuntu for smartphones. However this is very unlikely considering Canonical themselves said that the OS won’t be ready till 2014. So Ubuntu for smartphones is a no-go.
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Touch Support
The last and most likely is that Ubuntu will go the Windows 8 way by introducing full touch screen support. However, we can only hope that Ubuntu doesn’t sacrifice it’s original non-touch brethen like Microsoft did (or abandoned). Metro UI is great folks, but not for the good ole desktop.
Even if Canonical announces a new Ubuntu version, it won’t be until April 2013 that we’ll see a release. So it tight. Just 24 hours to go!
