Nothing marries the ‘Green’ and ‘Tech’ in Green Tech better than the Smart Herb Garden. At first glance, the entire concept looks otherworldly – growing plants without getting your hands dirty? Inconceivable till today but this very thing has been made possible by the group at Click & Grow, a company based at Palo Alto, California.
Growing plants is no mean feat. Many of us can’t even maintain nourishment to an already grown potted plant. And simply put, a large percentage of the world’s population, being victims of the urban culture, doesn’t have the time. Optimum space, perfect lighting, the right amount of water at the right time – hell, these are luxuries that even a human being craves for today. What if somebody engineers all this into a compact, low-maintenance device that would just sit there and voila, sprouts plants one day? With the Smart Herb Garden, you can do just that!
The Smart Herb Garden unit is like any other plug-and-play device. Connect it to a power socket, add some water and leave the growing to the plants to do. The star of the show is the nanotech ‘growth medium’ that plies the growing roots with the right amount of water, oxygen and other essential minerals at the right time. Since the Smart Herb Garden is intended to be kept indoors, the lighting is of paramount importance. This has been addressed by incorporating interesting, natural-looking, low-power lighting solution consisting of 2 LED lights that require 3W of power each.
The device itself is a work of art – a smooth rectangular base with rounded corners, an overhanging lighting bar, aesthetically pleasing colors – the team has nailed it. A little bit on the bulkier side at 850 gms, the Smart Herb Garden may not qualify as your travel partner but it is a perfect fixture for a splash of green for the indoors. Right now, the kits will come with plant cartridges for basil, thyme and lemon balm. Research is on for enabling enthusiasts to grow plants of their choice with these smart cartridges without having to depend upon initial limited options.
Mattias Lepp, Founder of Click & Grow is no stranger to the smart garden business as the team has already sold over 50,000 smart garden units. The Smart Herb Garden is clearly one of the more popular projects on Kickstarter as it already has over 3,500 backers with almost a month to go till the funding ends. Judging from the proposed timeline, the units will be delivered to backers sometime in September 2013 if everything goes according to plan.
There are a variety of options available for those interested in backing the project. Although the basic kit comes in a classic white, colors like kiwi green, orange and soft pink are available besides an exciting black Kickstarter-only edition that will be unveiled soon. Logistically speaking, shipping to the US and European locations is promised to be hassle free while green-loving-geeks who are stationed elsewhere will have to wait to see if shipping is available to their respective locations. To pledge your support for a greener planet, head over to the Smart Herb Garden.
