Tablet Combat : Sony’s Xperia Tablet Z vs Samsung’s Google Nexus 10

After many leaked pictures and rumored specs, Sony finally announced the launch of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z on a bright sunny morning in Japan. Showcased to be the thinnest and the lightest tablet till date, Sony seems to have gone all out to bring out a brilliant piece of work. Just a month ago Google made its entry into the Tablet arena with the Samsung Google Nexus 10, which got an amazing response thanks to Google’s strategy of ‘ Top-class Hardware at the lowest price possible’ . So, will Sony’s Xperia Tablet Z deter Google’s ongoing run or will it just be another low selling model like the Xperia Tablet S ?? Lets just jump into the spec-war and see who emerges a winner…

DISPLAY

Both the tabs have a 10.1 inch screen. While the Sony Xperia Tablet Z has an LED-backlit LCD Display, the Google Nexus 10 uses a Super PLS TFT Display, both of them having excellent and crisp displays. The Xperia Z is said to have a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels with a pixel density of 224 ppi when compared to Nexus 10′s resolution of 2560×1600 pixels with a pixel density of 299 ppi. Another feature that sets these two apart is the Sony Bravia Engine 2 which manages to provide an amazing viewing experience which makes up for its resolution.

SCORE: Xperia Z= 1  | Nexus 10 = 1

SOUND & MEMORY

Both the models sport a decent set of stereo speakers and have a 3.5mm head-phone jack. The only difference is that the Xperia Z boasts of a 3D surround sound system. One will only know how much difference that makes once the tab hits the market.

Memory-wise, both the tabs have a RAM of 2GB, but the Xperia Z comes only in a 32GB model whereas the Nexus 10 comes in 16GB as well as 32GB . That should not be a major problem as the Xperia Z comes with a microSD card slot that supports upto 64GB which is sadly not present on the Nexus 10. So, Sony wins hands-down in this section.

SCORE: Xperia Z = 2 | Nexus 10 = 1

OS & Processor

The Google Nexus 10 shows off the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean v4.2 , whereas the Sony Xperia Z manages to come with its own version of  the v4.1.2 of Jelly Bean and is planned to upgrade to v4.2 once they are ready to upgrade it.Google gets its point on this.

Coming to the processor, the Xperia Z tends to impress with its QuadCore 1.5GHz Krait processor as opposed to Nexus 10′s DualCore 1.7GHz Cortex A15 processor.Sony gets this point too.

SCORE: Xperia Z = 3 | Nexus 10=2

BODY & CAMERA

Sony has left no stone un-turned as it has put all its might in making the Xperia Tablet Z the Lightest and the Thinnest Tablet yet beating  Toshiba’s Excite X10 LE. Sony has also made it totally dust-proof and water proof, YES! Water proof! You read that right, not just water resistant, Water Proof!! Now that’s something that the Google Nexus 10 completely misses out on. I have to give Sony credit for that ( 1/2 a point).

Coming to the Camera, the Nexus 10 comes with a 5MP primary camera at a resolution of 2592х1936 pixels and an LED Flash plus 1.9MP secondary camera, but Sony gears it up with an 8MP primary camera with a picture quality of 3264×2448 pixels and 2.2MP secondary camera. Both come with 1080p video recording. Sony misses out on the LED flash but covers up with the higher resolution.

SCORE: Xperia Z =4.5 | Nexus 10 =3

NETWORK

The Google Nexus 10 completely disappoints as it does not have a provision for a SIM card which sadly means no 3G/4G LTE, but Sony has definitely hit it out of the park with provision for a microSim, enabling the device to use 3G and 4G LTE to its advantage. That’s a big point going Sony’s way.

FINAL SCORE: Xperia Z= 5.5 | Nexus 10=3

If you ask me, Sony has come up with a state-of-art Tablet and has fired all guns in making it the best in the market. Call me biased, but I think the Sony Xperia Tablet Z knocks out the Google Nexus 10. But only time will tell whether Sony lives up to the expectation or will it be another dud like the Sony Xperia Tablet S.

So, for people looking to get a great tablet , I would say the Google Nexus 10 is a safe bet but if you are ready to wait then I suggest you wait for the Xperia Tablet Z to come in the market, expected to be available in the coming month.
