Micromax A57 Ninja 3

The Micromax A57 Ninja 3 is the latest addition to the highly successful and immensely popular Ninja Series of Android smartphones launched by Micromax. It adds to the plethora of budget Android smartphones available by Indian manufacturers in the market, including Micromax’s own A52 Ninja 2 smartphone which was launched fairly recently. Let’s have a look at the package.

As you can see, the specifications are fairly standard and pretty average, but hey it’s a budget device! The OS is Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread, which is fairly old. However Micromax has it lightly skinned to spice things up. Let’s have a look at the Karbonn A5.

Karbonn A5

Karbonn A5 joins the expanding list of Karbonn’s A series (Android) smartphones. Joining the likes of Karbonn A1+ and Karbonn A7 (as well as the A7+, which we shall be discussing soon), the Karbonn A5 is a pretty neat addition to the crowd, with a nice design in a compact and cute package all together to the justified pricing. Let’s have a look.

The biggest change we can see between the Ninja 3 and the A5 is the RAM, which is double i.e. 512 MB in case of the latter. More RAM is a very good addition and can help a lot with issues such as lagging or running many apps in the background as apps quickly tend to use up and occupy all the free RAM available. 512 MB of RAM on the A5 will definitely contribute to a smoother user experience. The OS is Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread, which is fairly old. However Karbonn has it lightly skinned with GO Launcher which enhances the UI over stock Android.

Micromax A57 Ninja 3 v/s Karbonn A5 Showdown

DisplayBoth the Ninja 3 and A5 have a 3.5″ HVGA (480×320) display. The display tech is fairly standard, with plain LCD capacitive displays powering both devices. Tie

Chipset: Both the Ninja 3 and A5 have the same processor architecture, ARM Cortex A5. However the A5 is clocked at 800 MHz while the Ninja 3 has a slightly different chipset clocking the processor at 1 GHz instead. The GPU remains the same with Adreno 200 enhanced. The Ninja 3 will have a slight (around 20% theoretically) advantage in processor intensive tasks, but nothing that should be apparent or noticeable in daily usage. Ninja 3 wins

RAM: RAM is a big deciding factor for a smartphone, and Android smartphones are notorious for both their battery unfriendliness as well as excessive and bloated RAM usage. The Ninja 3 packs 256 MB of RAM whereas the A5 has double that at 512 MB. The difference in usage will be immediate with RAM heavy tasks and apps (games) as well as running multiple apps in the background. The A5 will have a sizable advantage in such scenarios. A5 wins

Camera: There are no huge sensor cameras like 8 MP or 5MP in this budget range. The camera units in such droids are fixed focus low end units meant for facebook or multimedia messages. The Ninja 3 packs a 3MP camera while the A5 packs a 2MP camera. In terms of RAW specs, the Ninja 3 wins

Battery: Both the smartphones have equally rated batteries, the Ninja 3 having a 1400 mAh unit while the A5 having a 1420 mAh unit. Based on specifications alone and the faster processor, we can give a win in this round to the A5 (as the faster processor will suck on more power, and thuse a higher rated battery would fare better). The A5 wins

Design: Coming to the last of this showdown, the design of the 2 smartphones. While the Ninja 3 has gone for curved ends and edges, the Karbonn A5 has gone for a more rectangular design. Both phones have huge bezel at the bottom as well, which doesn’t really add to a nice design, but we can’t also be expecting premium designs at this price range. The back of the Ninja 3 is slightly ugly to look at, with the curve and the camera bump, whereas the simplicity of the A5 clearly wins from the looks at it’s back too. The A5 comes in white with back covers which makes the smartphone downright sexy to look at. The Ninja 3 has 3 capacitive buttons below the display while the A5 has 4 of them. Design wise, the A5 wins

Concluding this showdown, we tell you where you can purchase these two phones and at what prices. Overall, the Karbonn A5 is a better choice among these two smartphones.
